Now, in 2022, the percentage of female engineers has increased from 13 to 14.5 in the UK. WISAY creates a campus-wide network of scientists across many scientific disciplines and provides the opportunity for Yale scientists to meet with leading women scientists from Yale and around the country. However, in most others, including in the UK and the USA, the percentage was rather low. It was founded in 1999 by three graduate students who wanted to create a forum for women in all disciplines of science. WISAY is a group of over 500 undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs. WISAY seeks to help overcome these disparities by supporting women at all career levels through our four main goals: However, women and gender minorities are still underrepresented in many STEM fields and face significant challenges at the highest levels of these professions. The involvement of women and gender minorities in advanced study and careers in STEM fields continues to grow. Today, women earn half of all bachelor’s degrees in science. Historically, only a small fraction of science degrees were awarded to women, but in recent decades women’s overall participation in STEM fields has steadily increased. Our community is welcoming not only to women and gender minorities at Yale, but to everyone who is interested in promoting gender equality in science and research. A large number of well-qualified women get left out of the S&T activities due to various circumstances which are usually. Studies show that professional development and mentorship are keys to retaining and attracting women and minorities in STEM and our BWISE program offers both.As WISAY (Women and Gender Minorities in Science at Yale), we are dedicated to promoting the interests of female, transgender, and non-binary scientists and advocating for gender equality in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Under this scheme, women scientists are being encouraged to pursue research in frontier areas of science and engineering, on problems of societal relevance and to take up S&T-based internship followed by self-employment. However, only 75,000 are working in these fields and less than 5,000 are in senior management roles. But the raw data show gaps between the men and women and between whites and minorities remain deeply entrenched -and, in some cases, have even widened.” Annually, more than 25,000 Black women obtain undergraduate degrees in STEM. ![]() News/Raytheon STEM Index found a “slight uptick in STEM-related education and employment activity in the United States compared to 2014. There is a pressing need for inclusion that has not been successfully addressed. We provide professional development and training focused on career advancement. We have created a platform and space to share career experiences and best practices. We provide opportunities to connect with others and expand your professional networks. The group consists of Black women from middle management through senior leadership with degrees in the sciences, math and engineering (even if you no longer work in that field). Black Women in Science and Engineering was founded in 2015 with the purpose to support underrepresented women in bridging the leadership gap through networking, mentorship and career development.
